Recommendations and important tips before traveling by boat in Galapagos

When you arrive in Galapagos and travel between islands, take into account the following tips that will make your ferry trip more pleasant and safe

  • Buy the ferry tickets at least 3 days in advance as the boats are sometimes full.
  • Arrive 1 hour before departure time.
  • The luggage check is carried out 30 minutes before the departure of the ferry.
  • Taxes: Have on hand $1 for the payment of the tax to the dock in Puerto Ayora and $10 for the entrance to Isabela Island.
  • In the first half of the year, from January to June, sea conditions are more stable than in the second half, from July to December, when the waves are strongest.
  • Booking in advance guarantees a safe, comfortable and hassle-free trip.
  • Ferries only travel to the inhabited islands of San Cristobal, Isabela, Santa Cruz and Floreana. To visit other islands you need to book a daily tour.
  • The boats do not travel directly from Cristobal Island to Isabela, they make a stop on Santa Cruz Island.
  • The only Island that charges an entry tax is Isabela Island.
  • Eat breakfast or lunch in advance.
  • The approximate travel time between islands is 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
  • There are additional costs such as the $ 1 water taxi. Have cash on hand.
  • Each passenger can carry up to 23 kg of luggage. Excess luggage will be charged a $10 fee.
  • Take a motion sickness pill one hour before leaving since the weather at sea is not predictable. Seas can be very high some days and very calm on others.
  • Sit as close as possible to the outboard motors because they spend more time in the water and you will not feel the pounding caused by the waves in the front of the boat.
  • Protect your travel bags well as seawater can sometimes enter the boat.
  • Have personal documents in a safe and dry place.
  • Enjoy the trip, you may see dolphins.
  • We recommend you visit the Trips Galápagos website where you can find the daily tours that take place in the Galapagos
